We live in an era where it is next to impossible to have a successful business or organisation without information systems or information technology. An information system is made up of five components that make it possible for people within organisations or businesses to communicate with each other and their customers, manage their operations, and be active with their suppliers. Bourgeois (2014) These components such as the hardware and software work with each other with the aim of converting data into useful information Bocij et al (2015). With these combined, value is brought to an organisation, just like Intrepid Travel. Hardware and SoftwareWith the proliferation of IT systems used today it is with no doubt an online based organisation like Intrepid travel must use various efficient physical hardware systems. Physical systems such as laptops and desktops, circuit boards and storage devices such as flash drives and input and output devices such as a mouse and a keyboard are many of what a travel agency like Intrepid use to run the organisation. Bocij et al. (2015) The core of this architecture is the CPU which in today’s world is usually on one chip. Bourgeois, (2014) Two primary manufacturers are Intel and AMD. Without Software, Intrepid travel would not be able to effectively use hardware or in other words, it simply would not function. Travel agencies such as Intrepid travel must gather the right programmers to write their types of software. Operating systems such as Microsoft Windows is the best in the market for any business organisation. This Operating system is what allows a user to have a relationship with the hardware. With this in mind, Intrepid must assure that their programmers are using these operating systems as a platform to implement and improve their website design, services and overall information for the travel industry. DataData can be often thought as pieces of information that is manipulated by the software system. It is a collection of that would be stored in an organised way so that particular items can be selected and retrieved quickly. To have a successful organisation, Intrepid must understand their users by collecting data and organise it into an aggregated, indexed and organised database. Bourgeois, (2014) There is a various set of business-level advantages of database systems that Intrepid must consider as they develop such as multi-user access, distributed access, database security and data quality. PeopleThe components of an Information systems are easily confused with the technological elements that is necessary but what is often forgotten about is the fact that if you look beyond all of these tools, it is the people who really run the show. Without a programmer, there would be no programming software, without a website designer there would be no website. Intrepid Travel must understand that the people involved in IS are an essential element and must never be overlooked. Bourgeois, (2014) ProcessThe process is the last component of an IS. Intrepid Travel must understand that internal processing systems using automated technology is simply not enough, but rather use the processing system to effectively manage, control and improve processes internally and externally with suppliers and customers is what can integrate a successful travel company. If Intrepid hope to gain competitive advantage they should highly focus on this component. Bourgeois (2014). References
